Job Description

Leads technical activities related to ongoing improvement of existing products and manages projects related to new product development.

Responsibilities and Duties

Responsible for all activities relevant to:

  • planning and management of new product development
  • planning of upgrades to software and hardware of existing products
  • translation of marketing requirements to technical documentation such as product design specifications
  • supervision and/or execution of all product development and design change tasks
  • preparation of test plans and supervision of verification testing activity


Specific duties as follows may be delegated, but are ultimately the responsibility of the Head of Product Design:

  • acting as liaison between Sales and the Product Development team, translates customer requirements to technical documentation such as hardware/software design specifications
  • assigns work and supervises members of the product development team in execution of project or technical tasks
  • designs architecture of software applications and firmware
  • performs or co-ordinates software development activities
  • performs or co-ordinates instrument design at the hardware level
  • creates and maintains a project management plan for each new product development
  • leads design reviews and maintains design review documentation
  • creates verification test plans
  • supervises testing to verify conformance of product, upgrade or fix to specified requirements
  • directs Manufacturing on matters related to design transfer of new products or product changes to the production floor
  • works with Manufacturing to overcome production issues related to product design
  • maintains software version control system
  • maintains software bug tracking system
  • releases software installation packages to Manufacturing
  • reviews and maintains product technical files for regulatory compliance
  • product design team management: performs and documents performance reviews, identifies team needs, prepares job postings, and participates in interviews of potential candidates
  • when necessary to meet company or project objectives, sources outside consultants or other design and technical resources such as laboratories or special equipment

Skills and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years experience in high-technology product development
  • Software team leadership
  • Highly skilled and experienced as a software developer
  • High level of understanding in electronic hardware design
  • Knowledgeable in quality systems and design controls
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent skills in technical writing and oral communication in English
  • Ability to self-educate and research
  • Ability to teach and mentor
  • Ability to lead a team of experienced software and hardware developers
